Sergio Reguilon Known for his attacking prowess, energetic runs, and tenacious defending, Reguilón has carved a niche for himself in the modern game. This article delves into his career trajectory, playing style, recent loan spells, and what the future holds for this exciting young defender.
From Madrid Academy to European Breakthrough: Early Career
Born in Madrid, Spain in 1996, Reguilón’s footballing journey began at the tender age of seven when he joined the prestigious Fundación Real Madrid youth academy. He steadily progressed through the ranks, showcasing his talent and dedication. In 2015, he secured a loan move to UD Logroñés in the Spanish Segunda División, marking his professional debut. Reguilón impressed with his attacking contributions and defensive solidity, returning to Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve team, for the following season.
The 2018-19 season saw Reguilón included in Real Madrid’s senior team under manager Julen Lopetegui. However, playing opportunities were limited due to the presence of established left-back Marcelo. Recognizing the need for regular playing time, Reguilón embarked on a pivotal loan move to Sevilla FC in La Liga for the 2019-20 season.
This loan spell proved to be a turning point in Reguilón’s career. Under manager Julen Lopetegui, with whom he had worked at Real Madrid, Reguilón flourished. He formed a formidable partnership with left-winger Lucas Ocampos, contributing to Sevilla’s successful Europa League campaign, where they emerged victorious. Reguilón’s impressive performances attracted the attention of several top European clubs.
A Dream Move to the Premier League: Joining Tottenham Hotspur
In September 2020, Tottenham Hotspur secured Reguilón’s signature on a permanent transfer from Real Madrid. This move reunited him with José Mourinho, his manager at Sevilla during their Europa League triumph. Reguilón quickly established himself as the first-choice left-back at Tottenham, impressing with his attacking intent and defensive work ethic. He seamlessly adapted to the high-intensity nature of the Premier League, forming a strong understanding with Son Heung-Min on the left flank.
The 2020-21 season saw Reguilón contribute to Tottenham’s run to the Carabao Cup final, where they narrowly lost to Manchester City. He continued to be a vital cog in the team under Mourinho and his successor, Ryan Mason. However, the arrival of Nuno Espírito Santo as manager in the 2021-22 season saw a shift in tactics, with Reguilón facing increased competition for his starting spot.
Loan Spells and Uncertain Future: The Search for Stability
The 2022-23 season witnessed a significant change for Reguilón. He was sent on loan to Atlético Madrid, his boyhood club, for the first half of the season. Despite facing stiff competition from Renan Lodi, Reguilón made valuable contributions when given the opportunity. However, his playing time remained limited. In January 2023, Reguilón found himself on another loan move, this time joining Manchester United for the remainder of the season.
At Manchester United, Reguilón struggled to adapt to manager Ralf Rangnick’s system and the team’s style of play. He found himself behind Luke Shaw in the pecking order and ultimately failed to make a significant impact. In the summer of 2023, Reguilón was loaned out once again, this time to Brentford in the Premier League. He displayed glimpses of his former self at Brentford, offering attacking threat and defensive stability. However, his future at Tottenham remains uncertain.
