Top Things to Consider Before Choosing Firefighting as a Career

One of the most rewarding career options in the U.S., firefighters rank 17 in highest-paying jobs without a degree and number 24 in best social service jobs. Firefighters respond to fire distress calls and medical emergencies, making it an all-encompassing job.

It’s no wonder that of the total firefighting personnel in the U.S., more than 50% are volunteer firefighters. However, beneath the glory of it all, it’s a profession straddled with challenges and demands sacrifices that not many understand.

In this article, we will explore the critical factors people should consider before embarking on an extraordinary journey as a firefighter.

Physical And Mental Demands

Firefighting is not a career meant for the faint of heart and mind. It demands pushing the human body and mind to their limits. Those aspiring for a career in this field must be in peak physical condition to pass the rigorous testing that assesses agility, endurance, and strength.

The job involves skills to navigate high-stress environments that demand quick thinking and decisive action while working irregular shifts with extended hours. Not to mention the ever-present risk of injury while on the job, ranging from burns and smoke inhalation to falls and deaths.

No wonder that around 89 lives were cut short in 2023 due to traumatic injuries, aneurysms, heart attacks, and strokes on duty or within 24 hours of duty.

Beyond the physical challenges, firefighters are also required to display incredible mental resilience to deal with high-pressure situations, cope with loss of life, and witness traumatic events. Maintaining composure, working effectively as a team, and making split-second decisions for success in most emergencies are crucial.

The physical and mental toll of the field can be significant, and aspiring firefighters must be prepared to tackle these challenges head-on.

Hidden Health Risks

The immediate dangers of the firefighting field are evident. However, there are a host of other hidden health risks that can build up over time. Firefighters are required to work amidst smoke, debris, and smoke, which often contain carcinogens.

New research suggests that cancer is a leading cause of death among firefighters. According to TorHoerman Law, one particularly alarming health risk is exposure to PFAS in firefighting foam.

For the uninitiated, AFFF, or aqueous film-forming foam, is a firefighting agent that is extremely effective against flammable liquid fires. However, it contains PFAS (per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances), a group of chemicals linked to serious health issues like cancer, immunity suppression, and developmental issues. Since firefighters are directly exposed to AFFF, they suffer long-term health consequences.

Given the risk and continued use of AFFF, there is an active firefighting foam lawsuit against the manufacturers like DuPont, 3M, and Chemours for hazarding people’s lives. The lawsuit has spotlighted these glaring issues, and while AFFF is still used for its effectiveness, steps are being taken to minimize its usage and reduce its impacts.

Lifestyle and Personal Sacrifice

If you aspire to become a firefighter, remember that the field entails significant personal sacrifices. The irregular and longer hours often result in sacrificing personal moments like vacations, birthdays, anniversaries, and other important family events. A strong support system is crucial for firefighters, as job stress can strain relationships and affect family life.

According to the First Responders Initiative, the divorce rate for first responders like firefighters is between 60% and 75%, which is much higher than the national divorce rate, which is 50%. In fact, the website claims that there’s only a 25% chance that first responders will retire from their profession while being married to the same spouse, which is a big price to pay.

The Rewards and Fulfillment

While the challenges of firefighting cannot be denied, the reward and sense of fulfillment from the job are equally profound. Firefighters significantly impact their society and community by saving lives and protecting properties. Overcoming life-threatening obstacles during the course of their duty and knowing that their work has a lasting impact on survivors can be incredibly fulfilling.

Apart from the adrenaline rush and incredible sense of fulfillment, firefighting is also a financially rewarding career. The demand for qualified firefighters remains high because of the dire shortage of firefighters in the U.S. According to the latest report, there has been a 32% decrease in volunteering because of the perils of the job. Therefore, many departments offer lucrative salaries, healthcare coverage, retirement plans, etc.

As you can already tell by now, choosing a career in firefighting is a serious decision that involves accepting the dire consequences it entails and should not be taken lightly. Apart from being ready to handle physical duress and mental issues, an aspiring firefighter should also be willing to make personal sacrifices. However, if making an impact on society, being able to save lives, and making a difference appeals to you, this is the perfect career.
