After suffering relegation from the Premier League in the 2022/23 season, Leeds United were heavily tipped for a swift return to the top flight alongside Leicester City and Southampton.

However, a run of one win in their opening five games (D3, L1) left them with plenty of ground to cover in the Championship title race.

They found their feet as the campaign progressed but missed out on automatic promotion behind Leicester and Ipswich Town.

Their disappointment was further compounded when they failed to secure promotion through the play-offs, losing to Southampton in the final.

They had been terrorised by Saints throughout the season, including the final game where they needed a win to bolster their chances of finishing as runners-up.

Leeds lost to Southampton by a combined scoreline of 5-2 over two meetings during the season before suffering a 1-0 defeat in the play-off final.

The pain of missing out on promotion still lingers for Leeds, but they only have themselves to blame after a gut-wrenching capitulation during the run-in.

The Whites won just one of their last six league games (D1, L4) and now face the daunting prospect of spending another year in the Championship.

Leeds Need Strategic Reinforcements to Challenge for Promotion

Securing promotion to the Premier League will undeniably be the club’s primary objective next season, but it will require a strategic balance between player sales and squad reinforcements.

While they’re bound to lose some high-profile stars this summer, they could be in business if they can get their hands on some of the Championship’s best performers to achieve their top-flight goal.

Leeds have already been linked with a move for Blackburn Rovers midfielder and last season’s Championship top scorer Sammie Szmodics.

The Ireland international bagged 33 goals in 48 games across all competitions last term and would be a shrewd acquisition for Leeds this summer.

Irish betting sites already have Leeds as favourites to secure promotion to the Premier League, and bettors on the Emerald Isle would be clamouring to back them if they sign Szmodics.

Punters would also wager on the Irish international to retain his Golden Boot trophy next term, although Leeds could struggle to lure him to Elland Road this summer.

The Yorkshire outfit are not in the best financial position to fork out the significant sum it would take to sign Szmodics unless they sell some of their high-value assets.

A Summer Exodus is on the Cards

Leeds will lose some of their best players this summer as a result of their failure to clinch promotion.

Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and Willy Gnonto are expected to leave, while Crysencio Summerville has been attracting plenty of interest from Premier League clubs.

The Dutchman bagged 19 goals and nine assists in 43 Championship games last term, finishing the season as Leeds’ top scorer and best performer by a country mile.

Patrick Bamford is another player who could leave Leeds this summer. Bamford finished the season with just eight goals in 33 games. He is a terrible finisher, as evidenced by his paltry 15% conversion rate.

His lack of clinical edge in front of goal repeatedly cost Leeds crucial points, and his inability to deliver the goods consistently is a glaring weakness the club can no longer afford to ignore.

Farke Must be Backed this Summer

Leeds faced serious competition in the promotion race last season, but they should be able to prevail against the current crop of Championship teams.

However, that depends on how they navigate the transfer market and their financial situation amid reports that they are knee-deep in debt from transfer fees.

Leeds will be keen to free up space on their wage bill this summer. Players such as Bamford haven’t consistently justified their hefty salaries and should be on the chopping block.

If high earners are replaced with decent talents hungry to fight for the shirt, then Leeds have a chance at securing promotion at the second time of asking.

While losing some of their key players would be a huge blow, a smart transfer strategy could hand manager Daniel Farke the tools he needs to restore the club’s Premier League status.
