The summer is the season for being out in the garden. If it’s sunny outside, with blue skies above, and very little cloud clover or rainy showers in sight, get out in the garden and have some fun! 

You’ve spent months putting the garden together, ensuring it’s well mowed, properly trimmed, and that your favourite flower seeds have had the chance to bloom. You’ve become a bit of an expert gardener along the way too! As such, now’s the time to revel in all that hard work, and have some worthy family time whilst you’re at it. 

But if you’re currently spoiled for choice and can’t quite decide what to do with your summer garden, we’ve got a list of potential activities to try out down below. If you need a bit of inspiration to decide how to best make use of the space, check out the ideas we’ve put together. 

Host Weekly Outdoor Dinners

Al fresco dining is always fun. Of course, when the bugs invade and get all over your dinner, it’s not quite as enjoyable, but that doesn’t always have to happen! You can set up some netting or use non-lethal traps to distract these critters, and then you can get back to your meal and the good conversation at hand. 

First though, make sure you build yourself a big enough space for dining outdoors. How many people are you going to want to come over on nights like these? You and your partner, maybe the kids, and maybe some extended family and friends? That could mean you have upwards of 6 to 8 people dining outside, and that’s going to require some square footage! 

Try to cover this area with something you can put up and take down without much effort. A big parasol, that’s been nailed into the ground in the middle of the table, is a good choice. You could also use a gazebo that’s been similarly pegged down, especially if you can buy a type that allows you to pin back the top back when you want to let some sun in. 

Create a Wild Garden

The summer provides plenty of moist air and sunny rays for most plants to start blooming. How lovely! Of course, this is also the time when bugs, critters, and creepy crawlies come burrowing into the garden – and that’s a good thing too! 

The more bugs you have in your backyard, the more eco-friendly the space is. And trust us when we say that bugs need plenty of space this year! Feeling ‘overrun’ with spiders, bees, wasps, ants, midges, beetles, aphids, snails, and slugs will go someway to returning insect population levels to where they really need to be. 

So why not go out of your way to create a wilderness garden this summer? Create a space for wildlife to boom, and plantlife to take root, and do so on purpose. You can still use the cordless lawn mower you’ve just bought to cut back the lawn and plant bed edges elsewhere, but leave a portion of your garden as wild and overgrown as possible. 

Plant for biodiversity here. Sow some wildflower seeds, and try not to mind seeing a few weeds pop up here and there. Set up some upturned pots, tubes, and insect hotels for critters to call their own, and think about digging out a little watering hole for the space as well. 

Camp Out

Have you ever considered camping out in your own backyard? If not, this is the summer to finally give it a go. Not only is it a lot of fun for kids and adults alike, but it can even be cooler than trying to sleep in the house during the height of the summer season. 

Camping out in the garden can also allow you access to the night sky in an unfettered way. You don’t have to stand out the front of your house for five minutes or so, pointing out constellations to the kids. You can zip your hoodies up, pop a blanket on the ground, and gaze up at the night sky and spend plenty of time wondering what’s out there. 

Bug Hunt and Birdwatch

Now that there’s going to be loads more bugs in the garden, you can be sure the birds will start flocking to your fence posts and the roof of your shed as well. If there are meals to be found in the ground, pigeons, magpies, ravens, doves, sparrows, starlings, and maybe even a seagull or two will start to frequent your outdoor paradise too. 

That will make bug hunting and birdwatching very easy and very fun over the course of the summer. Of course, these activities require a lot of commitment and plenty of silence, but if you want the kids to have something more lowkey to do after running around all day, these will be perfect. 

You can also have a great time hanging out the back windows or french doors, quietly watching as birds come in and out of the garden. Make sure you have a good pair of binoculars to make use of, as well as a guidebook you can flip through to find out what birds are really visiting your outdoor space. 

Have Fun in the Garden This Summertime

Summer fun is often best had in the gardens attached to our homes. Many core memories can be formed here, and if you’ve got some good lawn space on offer, you don’t need to find a wild camping spot to enjoy sleeping in tents under the stars! 

Whilst you’re out there, be sure to buy some bug nets and jars to catch butterflies and beetles in, and make sure you invite your friends and family round for an outdoor dinner and/or BBQ once a week. 

And remember, the more wild your garden is, the healthier it will make the surrounding environment. If that’s not something to celebrate during the summer, we don’t know what is!
