Method 1: The Classic Waterfall Design (Pre-1.19)

This is a time-tested design that works flawlessly in Minecraft versions before the 1.19 update (The Wild Update). Here’s what you’ll need:

Dig a pit: 

Create a 1x2x3 pit in the ground.

Place the stair block: 

On one of the shorter sides of the pit, place your stair block facing inwards.

Build the trapdoor frame: 

On the two sides adjacent to the stair block, place two trapdoors facing upwards like doors.

Water source: 

On the empty space in front of the stair block, place your water bucket, creating a flowing water source.

Lava dispenser: 

Behind the trapdoor frame (opposite the water source), create a one-block gap and place a dispenser facing the pit.

Fill the dispenser: Load your lava bucket into the dispenser.

Trigger the flow: 

To activate the obsidian farm, simply right-click the dispenser. The lava will flow out, come into contact with the water, and create obsidian on the bottom of the pit.

Important Note:  Since water flows horizontally in older versions, the trapdoors ensure it only touches the stair block, allowing lava to reach and convert it into obsidian.

Method 2: The Modern Piston Design (Post-1.19)

This design utilizes pistons and a game rule change introduced in Minecraft 1.19 to create a streamlined obsidian generator. Here’s what you’ll need:

Dig a pit: 

Create a 1x2x5 pit in the ground.

Place the water source: 

At the bottom of the pit, on one of the longer sides, place your water bucket, creating a water source.

Lava dispenser: 

On the opposite long side of the pit, two blocks above the water source, create a one-block gap and place a dispenser facing the pit.

Fill the dispenser: Load your lava bucket into the dispenser.

Sticky piston placement: 

On the same side as the dispenser, one block above it, place a sticky piston facing the dispenser.

Redstone activation: 

On the block directly above the sticky piston, place a redstone block.

Redstone dust connection: 

From the redstone block, run a line of redstone dust down to the dispenser, connecting it.

Repeater timing (optional): 

If you want more control over the lava flow and obsidian creation, you can place repeater blocks along the redstone dust line. Each repeater with a one-tick delay allows the water to flow for a longer duration before the lava makes contact, potentially yielding more obsidian per activation.

How it Works:  

When the redstone block is powered, it activates the redstone dust, causing the sticky piston to extend and push the dispenser one block forward. This temporarily disrupts the water source, allowing lava to flow out, touch the water, and create obsidian.
