Top River Fishing Spots in England

Whether you’re a keen angler or looking for a place to start, river fishing offers some great opportunities that are different from your typical fishing lake. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the best rivers for fishing across England.

Helford River, Cornwall

Fishing has long since been considered a Great British sport – particularly bass fishing. This is so much so that it has inspired a wide range of different media, from TV shows like Robson Green: Coastal Fishing to films like Bigmouth Forever, and even online casino games. For example, games like Big Bass Splash slot come from a wide and varied franchise of fishing-themed slot games, using recognisable imagery such as fish, tackle, rods, fishermen, and reels to provide an immersive and interactive experience. What you may have noticed in these media representations, however, is that they tend to be located out at sea or in warmer climates.

Some of the best bass fishing spots in the UK are along the South West coast – but this area has plenty of river fishing spots too. Whilst the Helford River may be classed as sea fishing for some, the clue is in the name! This Cornish estuary is a hidden beauty for bass anglers, as you can catch good-sized fish in the area, thanks to the mixture of woodland and secluded creeks. The environment means Helford River is also home to masses of plaice, pollack, and mackerel if that’s more your cup of tea.

River Rothay, Lake District

The Lake District is widely popular with both domestic and international tourists. According to the official Lake District National Park statistics, the area is visited by just under 20 million visitors every year. Known for its gorgeous lakes, we’re turning our heads to the rivers that feed them. One river in particular that stands out is the River Rothay, which runs to Grasmere Lake and Rydal Water.

The name ‘Rothay’ comes from the Old Norse for ‘red one’, which later has been interpreted as symbolic of trout. For this reason, some know the Rothay as the river of trout. The best section of water for catching these trout can be found between Ambleside and Rydal Water. However, smaller trout can be found almost everywhere along the river.

River Aire, Leeds

Of course, we couldn’t fail to mention any of the fantastic fishing spots in the Leeds area. Whilst Yorkshire might be better known for its lake fishing spots like Swillington Park and Yeadon Tarn, the River Aire offers equal opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. Some of the best spots to set up your kit are Thwaite Mills, South Accommodation Road, and the Stockbridge area of Keighley. You can easily check the river’s water levels, conditions, and conservation areas via the Aire Rivers Trust.

The River Aire is particularly good for coarse fishing, which is essentially rough fish with coarser scales than regular game fish such as chub, roach, and barbel. The waters also make a great habitat for different trout, making the River Aire a good spot for trout anglers.

As these spots are a mix of salt and freshwater fishing locations, it is important to make sure that you get the appropriate licenses before reeling in your catch. Once that’s sorted, it’s time to sit back and have fun.
